Printmaking
Printmaking
Traditional printmaking is a centuries-old art form that involves transferring images from a prepared matrix (such as a woodblock, metal plate, or stone) onto paper or fabric. Techniques like woodcut, linocut, engraving, etching, lithography, and screen printing each offer unique textures, line qualities, and expressive possibilities—rooted in craft, precision, and the physicality of the medium.
Among these techniques, etching stands out for its delicate line work and tonal depth. The process involves coating a metal plate (usually copper or zinc) with an acid-resistant ground, scratching the design through the ground to expose the metal, then immersing the plate in acid to "bite" the exposed lines. After cleaning, ink is applied, the surface wiped clean, and the ink remaining in the etched grooves is transferred to dampened paper under immense pressure—using an etching press.
The etching press is the heart of intaglio printmaking. Its heavy steel rollers apply even, controlled pressure across the plate and paper, forcing the ink out of the recessed lines and onto the surface. This process requires skill, material knowledge, and an understanding of pressure, dampness, and timing—turning a prepared plate into a tangible, reproducible work of art with rich texture and subtle detail that digital methods cannot replicate.
